Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see the doctor?

Without a referral you will not be able to claim at Medicare for your consultation meaning that you will not be able to get the Medicare rebate. It is therefore practice policy that we require an up to date referral prior to all appointments.

How long will I have to wait to see the doctor?

Waiting times vary however it would be fairly common to wait 2 or more weeks to see the doctor. If you have an urgent matter please speak to our receptionists and we will do our best to organise an appointment as soon as possible.

How much does a consultation cost?

Normally an initial consultation is $200 however this can vary depending on the length of consultation. Follow up consultations are usually $100 however this also varies depending on the length of consultation.

Does Peninsula Gastroenterology bulk bill?

At Peninsula Gastroenterology we bulk bill aged pensioners who produce a valid pension card at the time of appointment.

If I need to have a procedure where can I have it done?

This depends on your doctor and if you would like to go as a public or private patient. A table has been provided below to explain this.

If I have a procedure done as a public patient will I have to pay anything?

Medicare will cover the cost of your procedure so you will not have to pay anything.

If I have a procedure as a private patient will I have to pay anything?

If you choose to have a procedure as a private patient you would usually have private health insurance. Depending on what level of cover you have and what fund you are with you may need to pay whatever excess is applicable to your level of cover. This varies between health funds and policies and you will need to call your fund to find out. The good news is that both Dr O’Farrell and Dr Suttor have signed no-gap agreements with almost all health funds in Australia meaning that they will bill your health fund directly and that they will not charge you a gap payment. This means that you would usually only have to pay the excess on your policy. There is also a chance that you may need to pay for some pathology however this depends if you have any biopsies taken so it is impossible to give a definite figure prior to your procedure.

Can I get a copy of some or all of my medical records?

If you have been to Peninsula Gastroenterology and for some reason you need a copy of your medical record please call the office. We will be happy to oblige however please understand that due to privacy laws you may be required to provide us with a written request and photo identification before you will be given a copy.
