Motility Disorders

Functional gastrointestinal disorders are characterized by problems with the way the organs of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) work or function. Motility disorders are diseases associated with the movement of food down the GI tract aided by the rhythmic muscular movements of the organs. The condition is caused when there are problems with the co-ordination of muscles and nerves of the gastrointestinal tract, sensitivity of nerves or impairment in the way the brain controls the GI tract. The condition can affect people of all age groups and gender.

Some of the symptoms associated with this condition are pain, nausea, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, heartburn, abdominal distension, and muscle spasms. The most common conditions associated with functional GI and motility disorders (FGIMDs) are irritable bowel syndrome (altered bowel consistency and abdominal pain) and functional dyspepsia (ulcers in the GI tract and indigestion).
